Privacy Policy
StepMark is a local-first Chrome extension for turning browser workflows into editable guides and optional video tutorials. This policy explains what information the extension handles and when information may leave your browser.
1. Information StepMark handles
When you explicitly start recording, StepMark may handle active-tab URLs and titles, navigation, clicks and nearby element context, screenshots, and optional active-tab video. It also handles guide edits, labels, narration scripts, privacy regions, appearance and language preferences, and optional AI model configurations and API keys. Pages being recorded may contain personal or sensitive information.
2. Local storage
Sessions, screenshots, guides, and video are stored in IndexedDB in your current Chrome profile. Preferences and model profiles are stored in chrome.storage.local. Short-lived recording recovery state may be stored in chrome.storage.session. StepMark does not upload this local data to a StepMark-operated server.
3. Optional AI polish
AI polish is disabled until you configure a provider and actively run it. The request is sent directly from the extension to the endpoint you configured. It may include guide text, active-tab URLs and titles, structured event and page context, and, for supported vision models, selected screenshots. Your API key is sent to that provider for authentication. The provider's own terms and privacy policy apply to that processing.
4. Video and narration
StepMark declares Chrome's tab-capture capability at installation, but no video is captured until you select Document + Video and explicitly start recording. Video mode records only the active browser tab, not the entire desktop, and stores the result locally. Narration uses browser and operating-system speech synthesis; StepMark does not upload narration scripts to a StepMark speech service.
5. How information is used
Information is used only to record the workflow you requested, generate and edit a tutorial, apply privacy masks, preview optional narration, perform user-requested AI polish, and export files.
6. Sharing and sale
StepMark does not sell personal information, use it for advertising or creditworthiness, or provide the developer with access to your local recordings. Information leaves the extension only when you explicitly use a configured AI provider or when you download, copy, upload, or share an exported file.
7. Retention and deletion
Local data remains until you delete sessions in StepMark, clear extension data, reset settings, or uninstall the extension. Files you export are controlled by you and must be deleted from their destination separately.
8. Security and privacy tools
StepMark does not execute remotely hosted code. AI endpoints should use HTTPS. Automatic and manual screenshot masking tools are available, but automated detection may not find every sensitive value. Review every final guide, screenshot, video, and export before sharing.
9. Website analytics
The StepMark website uses Google Analytics 4 to understand page visits and interactions such as Chrome Web Store link clicks and manual ZIP download clicks. Website analytics may process page URLs, referrer information, browser and device details, approximate location, and interaction events. It applies only to getstepmark.com, not to the StepMark extension. Recordings, screenshots, guides, video, API keys, and extension usage are not sent to Google Analytics. Google Signals and ad-personalization signals are disabled for this website tag. Google's Privacy Policy applies to its processing.
10. Chrome Web Store Limited Use
The use of information received from Chrome APIs adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. StepMark uses the information only to provide or improve its single user-facing workflow-documentation purpose.
